Not Careless But Carefree

God announced that “Whosoever listens to me shall live without a care, undisturbed by fear of misfortune,” Proverbs 1:33 NEB. Please read this verse again and notice that God wants you living without a care!  In other words, Christians can be carefree.  The dictionary defines carefree as “without care or worry; without painful apprehension.”

Being carefree and careless are two different things.  Careless is defined as “not paying attention; not thinking beforehand; neglectful or reckless.” Remember, you can be a carefree adult without fear of being careless.  We sometimes fear freedom from worry because we believe only careless people don’t worry.  Ridiculous!  Fearful people worry.

Mark 4:36-40 relates how a vicious storm nearly sunk the apostles’ small boat.  As the water level in the boat rose, the apostles frantically bailed, but Jesus remained asleep.  As their situation deteriorated, the apostles shouted, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” They accused Jesus of carelessness.  However, he wasn’t careless, but carefree.  After calming the storm, Jesus asked the apostles, “Why are you so fearful?  How is it that you have no faith?”

Christian friend, be willing to not worry!  Understand that lack of worry is God’s will for those who trust him.  Remember, whoever listens to God lives “without care, undisturbed by fear of misfortune.”
