Your Companion During Troubled Times

breaking newsInstantaneous electronic communication fills 21st century humanity with a constant birage of news about earth’s troubles.  This knowledge can easily overwhelm us with dread and remorse.  In fact, Jesus predicted, “On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity….People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world,” Luke 21:25-26.
Beloved Bible

But things can be different for those who love Jesus!  Scripture constantly promises that God is your companion during troubled times.  Therefore, we must diminish our consumption of the bad news that swirls around us and increase our intake of God’s Word and promises.  Earth’s troubles are meant to distract us from the Lord, but we determine to regard Earth’s troubles as reminders of his companionship with us.  Write Scriptures on index cards and carry them with you.  Fill your smart phone with God’s promises that predict his constant care of you and your family.  Refuse to allow sinful humanity to gain control of your thoughts.  The Bible is all about focusing our meditation on God who remains in control when life on Earth appears out of control.

standing on his promisesHere are some recommended verses that will strengthen your confidence in God’s companionship:

  • God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble,” Psalm 46:1.
  • “I will be with [you] in trouble,” Psalm 91:15.
  • I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world,” John 16:33.
  • Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus,” Philippians 4:6-7.

Please do yourself a favor.  Spend less time with the television and more time in the presence of Jesus.  His superhuman peace will flow into you and you will remain aware of the troubled times without fearing them.

  1. Dear James….I sent this to my FB page today…such a good reminder. Thank you. (The last scripture is Philippians 4:6-7)

In light of today being 9-11, I’m using it as my study guide so I looked back at the Greek words used for peace and for guard.

Paul used a word for peace – eirene – denoting a harmonious relationship (with Him) – rather than the wholeness of Shalom.
And although we often read “guard your hearts”, Paul used a word for “keep” – phroureo – that refers to a military guard.
    What a promise!

On 9-11, I asked Father what to do and He said, “Praise me all day long.” The message remains the same. : )

    Love from the Kogers…….

Thanks, Diana. We have finally corrected the reference. Hope your study went well.

  2. Hi, James,

    Thanks for the helpful blog!

I think that you’ll want to change the last reference from John to Philippians.

    Blessings!
    Lois
